Chia Jam (3 Ingredients!)

Sharing is caring!

This chia jam recipe is my favorite breakfast topping! I first started making this jam out of a need to use up an overabundance of strawberries as well as the desire to enjoy a jam that wasn’t loaded with sugar and additives. My search for store-bought options was futile. So, I took matters into my own hands and made this chia seed jam recipe instead. Now, it has become a family favorite, and there’s always a jar in the fridge!

Sweet, chunky, and thick, this homemade chia jam is even tastier than pre-made options. Plus, it’s completely refined sugar-free, super customizable, and actually good for you, thanks to the healthy fats and fiber from the chia seeds and berries. And did I mention that it comes together with just 4 ingredients, one pot, and less than 10 minutes? Adjust it to suit your flavor and texture preferences, and use it to add sweet, fruity flavor to all your favorite meals.

Ingredients and Notes

  • Berries: For the original recipe, I used fresh strawberries. Since then, I’ve tested raspberries, blackberries, and blueberries, and they all taste great. You can even use peaches, nectarines, or plums. Really, any fruit works. Frozen fruit works well, too. Adjust the cooking time as needed.
  • Chia Seeds: Black chia seeds or white chia seeds both work. These help thicken the jam without the need for pectin.
  • Lemon Juice: Freshly squeezed lemon juice is best, balancing the flavors of the chia jam. I also sometimes add a dash of lemon zest for a pop of bright, citrusy flavor. Try substituting orange juice or lime juice for a slightly different taste. Start with a small amount, and add more as needed, depending on the sweetness of your fruit.
  • Maple Syrup: A natural sweetener, this enhances the flavor of the fruit without the need for refined sugar. If preferred, substitute honey or agave. Start with a small amount, and add more to taste.

How to Make Chia Jam with 4 Ingredients

This chia seed jam recipe is truly so easy! All you need is a medium saucepan. Here’s an overview of the process:

  1. Combine. Add all the ingredients to a saucepan, and bring the mixture to a simmer over medium heat.
  2. Cook. Let the jam cook until the fruit begins to break down. I give it a quick stir occasionally to promote even cooking and help the fruit break down.
  3. Mash. Mash the fruit to your desired consistency. I like to use a potato masher, but a fork or immersion blender also work. Leave a few chunks as I did in the image, or puree the jam completely. Enjoy!

Ways to Use Homemade Chia Jam

I’ve caught my husband enjoying this jam straight from the jar, and honestly, I can’t blame him. However, if you’re looking for inspiration, try spooning your chia jam over toast, pancakes, waffles, or microwave oatmeal, or stovetop oatmeal. Or, swirl it into yogurt bowls or cottage cheese. It’s also tasty added to beverages!
