What is Quinoa?
If you’re unfamiliar, quinoa, pronounced keen-wah, is a type of pseudograin. This just means that it’s not actually a grain but is eaten similarly to other grains like rice and cereal. It’s also nutritionally similar to whole grains and is naturally gluten-free.
An ancient grain, quinoa has been grown for over 7,000 years and originally comes from the Andes. However, today it is grown throughout the globe. You can find over 3,000 different types of quinoa!
No matter the variety, quinoa is a nutrient powerhouse, offering a complete protein source (meaning it contains all nine essential amino acids), vitamins, minerals, and fiber, including:
- Manganese
- Magnesium
- Phosphorous
- Folate
- Copper
- Iron
As a result, it makes for an excellent addition to a well-rounded diet!
The Most Common Types of Quinoa
While there are endless types of quinoa, the most popular varieties include red, black, white quinoa, and tri-color. Each color of quinoa option has a slightly different taste and texture, but it’s so subtle you probably wouldn’t notice.
They’re all tender and mildly nutty when cooked properly. As a result, you can use any quinoa you have on hand!
